Sustainability

Our Philosophy

Creating positive change through the joy of travel.

Daintree Ecolodge is An Intrepid Company, which means that at our core is the belief that travel can be a force for good. We’re passionate about respecting local people and places. We are committed to making a positive impression on the community and reducing our impact on the environment through sustainable initiatives.

Sustainability lies at the heart of who we are as a business – from adopting innovative green technologies, to getting back to basics and working closely with the Eastern Kuku Yalanji Traditional Owners. It’s in our DNA to continuously look for areas where can have a more positive impact and expand our efforts to tackle important sustainability issues.

Energy Usage & Environment

  • Reducing emissions: Daintree Ecolodge continues to work to reduce our emissions and waste to minimise our impact on the environment.
  • Renewable energy: A new solar panel plant has been installed to support the transition of the property to 100% renewable energy.
  • Environmentally friendly: Energy-efficient LED lighting is used throughout the Ecolodge.
  • Innovative: We are developing a cutting-edge system with an IT partner that will coordinate when air conditioning and energy is required, according to when people are in the rooms or on site.
  • Planting trees: Our partnership with Rainforest Rescue allows us to assist in the reforestation of areas of the Daintree Rainforest that have been impacted by human development.

Waste Management & Recycling

  • No single-use plastics: We have completely eradicated single-use plastics from all Ecolodge guest areas, including the rooms and restaurant. In the kitchen, we no longer use single-use plastics and are working with suppliers to reduce the delivery of items wrapped in plastic. Our effort to influence supplier practices has already resulted in positive, new approaches to food delivery and is having long term environmental benefits.
  • Sustainable amenities: Single-use amenities have been removed from rooms and instead we use refillable toiletry dispensers and washable slippers made from recyclable materials.
  • Re-usable drink containers: Guests are provided with complimentary reusable drink bottles to reduce waste and keep cups can be purchased at the Ecolodge.
  • No plastic straws: We support the anti-straw movement to help clean up our oceans. Paper straws are available upon request.
  • Recycling: We are leading the way in bottle recycling as the first operator in the Daintree to utilise the Containers for Change scheme. We are now also encouraging others to adopt the recycling scheme and improve their local recycling programs.

Sustainability & Climate Change

  • Sustainable products: We source eco-friendly cleaning products instead of harsh cleaning chemicals.
  • Organic produce: Our on-site herb and veggie patch provides our chefs with selected fresh produce for guest meals.
  • Food waste: We are committed to recycling and divert food waste from landfill where possible.
  • Water treatment: We have a new bio-cycle septic tank and waste water treatment plant that allows water to be recycled and used for irrigation and watering.
  • Climate protection: The Ecolodge has undertaken climate risk proofing. Where possible, infrastructure changes have been made to locate technology near the roof to remain dry and ensure that items can be relocated in the event of a flood or cyclone warning.

Community Engagement and Philanthropy

  • Local produce: We work with suppliers in the Far North Queensland region to source local, organic, free range, fair trade, biodynamic and sustainably farmed produce and products.
  • Eco-friendly amenities: Daintree Ecolodge has developed branded amenities using products from MadeWild, a local First Nation-owned business.
  • Supporting artisans: We showcase and sell artwork on behalf of local First Nations Kuku Yalanji artists. A portion of funds goes directly to the Kuku Yalanji people.
  • First Nations consultation: We have developed partnerships with Traditional Owner families, bringing them back on country for the first time and getting their input on developments, such as the publicly accessible walking track on the property.
  • Supporting the community: We are a supporter of the local economy, working with local suppliers on eco-friendly activities offered to our guests.
  • Conservation: We’ve supported Rainforest Rescue’s reforestation of old cane farming land at the NightWings property in the Daintree since 2015. The project has been successful in reducing runoff into the Great Barrier Reef, with water tests showing that the replanted rainforests have significantly helped reduce sedimentation.

Eco Certification

Daintree Ecolodge is proud to be an Eco Certified Advanced Ecotourism Property and Climate Action Business. We encourage responsible travel to natural areas that conserve the environment, sustain the wellbeing of the local people and involve continued education of both our guests and team.

Our focus on Ecotourism benefits our business, our staff, the local community and most importantly, the precious environment in which we operate so that it is here for generations to come.
